Welcome to Bhutan Animal Rescue and Care!
BARC’s mission is to promote the health and welfare of all animals. We believe in the intrinsic value of animals, independent of the utility value that humans may give to them. Animals are sentient beings with feelings, consciousness, and integrity, and should be treated with respect, kindness, and compassion.
We rescue animals that have been injured or are suffering from disease, and nurse them back to health with support from local veterinary services in Bhutan.
What We Do

Who We Are
BARC has evolved over the past 18 years from the personal initiative of Marianne Guillet, a French architect and geographer turned veterinarian and Hendrik Visser, a Dutch civil engineer and sociologist, into a registered NGO with the Royal Government of Bhutan.
Our Patients
Numerous dogs, cats, macaques, mules, cows, goats, and pigs have found shelter at our rescue centres in Yoeselpang and Paro.
Many of our recovered cats and dogs are looking for loving homes, while those who are handicapped or suffer from chronic diseases can find a warm permanent welcome at our shelters.
Thousands of animals need your help!
BARC is financed directly by Marianne and Hendrik, but also relies on support to make the operations sustainable.
The BARC centre provides animal rescue, shelter and medical care mostly to injured and sick stray dogs, cats and monkeys, in a safe and welcoming environment where they are cared for professionally with kindness and compassion.
